This is the necklace that was in the bag with it when I got it, but im willing to bet that it wasnt original. I think I would get a stronger chain. I dont know that this chain will break, but I wouldnt guarentee that it wouldnt. I dont think it originally came with the pendant, but that will be for you to decide.. whether you go with new chain, beadstyle or what have you. either way, it seems to dainty for such an amazingly detailed, yet completely raw piece. Perhaps leather straps would be more ideal... either way, I only posted them together because they came that way, and since I'm no expert, decided just to post it the way I got it. The beads just seem to be more modern... I dont know, just my opinion.. back to the details.
I did polish this one up more than i do most of the pieces i post, because I was attempting to identify why it was so dark in the crevices.
I still cant tell if this is cast or hand worked. The back clearly looks cast. But you can see tool marks in the front, and is clearly etched or engraved into the sterling.
The blackness in the pendant, is not patina. Not sure what it is, paint? Looks like a sap, but it is not sticky... doesnt quite look like paint either.. not sure, but it does give it a rather unique look.
I wasnt sure what this was supposed to be, but it did not take long at all to discover that this is an Aztec God.
Quetzalcoatl
, the
Aztec
version of the Feathered
Serpent deity
, was the
god
of wind, bringer of maize, and instrumental in the creation of the
Aztec
universe.

See the abstract faces in the artwork
I see a bird that is projecting out from the head of Quetzacoatl, but when rotated counter clockwise it becomes winged serpant. The serpant and bird share the same eye... the serpants second eye, is slightly visible behind the head of the bird, and the birds body is the serpants open mouth. I have found skulls, frogs, lizards... in fact, I even began to see faces where there probably were none. I stopped looking after realizing that...
Go ahead, look at the pictures, see how many faces, and creatures you can find. Everytime you rotate the pendant new creatures and faces appear. Some are distorted to the point that only the idea is there, but still leaves you wondering it that is by design, or coincidence.
It tests as high silver content. I would say 93.5 to 95% pure. That is only my opinion based off the reaction to the acid.
The pics are not enhanced, except by the sun. The abalone really is that beautiful. The coral is a deep dark red. Not dull red as the pics seem to show.
I received a substantial amount of sterling and turquoise items, which I intend to post in the coming weeks. There are some rather unique and completely bizarre pieces, an owl in flight, bear paw bracelets, kachinas, unidentified creatures, etc.
