DESIGNER/COMPANY/LOCATION:
Miguel Garcia (Martinez) & Jose Luis Flores:
This is a collaborative piece by two famous Taxco, Mexico silver artisans who both produced for some of the best silver houses while simultaneously working independently. The mark
Miguel
belongs to Miguel Garcia (Martinez) who was the primary contract (“contratista”) Designer for both “Emma” Melendez who hired him in 1954, and Rancho Alegre which became one of the largest retailers of Mexican silver. The
JLF
belongs to Maestro Silversmith, Jose Luis Flores, who initially trained at William Spratling’s
Taller de Las Delicias
. When renowned designer Héctor Aguilar left Spratling in 1939, Flores followed to work at the then new
Taller Borda
where Aguilar would give him a design saying, "Here's my design, give it life." Flores also did contract work for Emma Melendez as well as others.
