Antique Fuchi Kashira for Samurai Sword (F-4)
Title: Ishiguro-style, Mandarin Ducks on Japanese Apricot
Signature: Ishiguro Masaaki
Age: Edo period, Tenpo era (1831-1845)
Material: Copper
Description
This Fuchi Kashira was made of copper. Masaaki Ishiguro was a pupil of Masatsune Ishiguro, who opened Ishiguro school. Ishiguro school became a famous metalwork school, and they were typically good at flowers and bird designs. Its creator's name, Masaaki, is engraved on the side of Fuchi.
Two birds that stay on Japanese apricot trees are designed on this Fuchi Kashira. These birds might be mandarin ducks. Male mandarin ducks have bright red colors, so people appreciate their catchy appearance. This bird pattern represents happy marriage and has been used for sword mountings and Kimono (traditional Japanese costume) or furniture. The flowering of Japanese apricot blossoms announces the arrival of spring. Japanese apricot blossom pattern represents patience, vitality, or prosperity of future generations.
What is Fuchi Kashira?
Fuchi Kashira is a kind of metal fitting of the Japanese sword, which improves the strength of the handle. Fuchi Kashira is a combination of two parts; Fuchi and Kashira. Fuchi was put next to Tsuba (hand-guard), and Kashira was put on the bottle of the grip. Fuchigashira had developed not only its practicality but also beauty for the decoration of the Japanese sword.
